For those of us who enjoy a good German beer and like to tour local breweries, the Kuchlbauer Brewery and Tower (Kuchlbauer-Turm) in Abensberg Germany is one that is not to be missed. Owned and operated by the Salleck family since 1904, Kuchlbauer brews only Weisbeer and is a rather small brewery however, they do have a nice set up. They have a Bier-Apotheke (pharmacy) which is kind of cool because now we can prove that beer is actually medicinal! They also have a collection of old brewing and bottling equipment which I found interesting because I like old things like that. There is a tasting room and an outdoor beer garden available also but the big draw for this little brewery is the famous Kuchlbauer tower built by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an Austrian artist who was known for his unique styles. Unfortunately, Mr. Hundertwasser passed away before its completion. The tower, which is adjacent to the beer garden, opened in 2010 after a compromise with the local government concerning the original planned height of 70 meters. Evidently, there are laws in place stating that nothing can be taller than the local church steeple so they had to scale back on the height, however, it is still an impressive 35 meters of awesome shapes and elements topped with a huge onion dome! Located in the village of Abensberg, which is about 30 minutes from Regensberg, the brewery offers tours which include the Kuchlbauer-Turm that are available in English and German.
